Lula M. Schmidt, daughter of Soren and Anna (Kerr) Christensen, was born December 24, 1918 in Pocahontas County, Iowa. She attended school in Plover and Des Moines Township.

On September 25, 1935 Lula was united in marriage to William H. Schmidt at the Lutheran Church in Mallard, Iowa. To this union a son, Roger, was born. Bill and Lula farmed north of Curlew for a few years before moving to a farm northwest of Curlew. In 1972 they moved to Emmetsburg.

Lula worked at the Emmetsburg Community School for twenty six years. In 1961 she began helping her husband with custodial work at the Middle School later transferring to West Elementary where she worked in the lunch room. After that Lula went to South Elementary where she was a teacher's aide and did custodial work. She then completed her twenty six years doing laundry and working in the lunch room at the high school. She was truly loved by all of the students at the schools.

Lula attended Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg and the Curlew First Baptist Church. Lula loved going traveling with Bill and going to Thurston's every Friday night for dinner. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Lula loved children, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She enjoyed going to their ball games and watching them show calves during the 4-H fair. She also looked forward to the weekends when they would spent the night with her.

Lula died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Lura McGuffin, Nelva Hansen, Fern Muldoon, Beulah Hubbell, Alvena Christensen and Merle Kauffman; and brothers, Harold Christensen, Warren Christensen and Robert Christensen.
