Wyatt Sawyer, "Mr. Optimist," beloved minister of Southside Church of Christ, lost his battle with leukemia on Sunday morning, April 22, 2012. Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Southside Church of Christ. Visitation: 10 a.m. to service time Friday. He will lie in state noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole. Memorials: World Christian Broadcasting, 605 Bradley Ct., Franklin, Tenn. 37067-8200 (www.worldchristian.org).

Wyatt Sawyer was born June 15, 1924, in Dallas, to Wyatt and Clara Beardon Sawyer. A 1941 graduate of W.H. Adamson High School, Wyatt was president of his class. He earned a B.A. from Harding College and an M.A. from the University of Houston. Wyatt's lifelong ministry with the Churches of Christ began in Charleston, Miss. Returning to Texas, he served as youth and education minister at Oak Cliff Church of Christ in Dallas, as pulpit minister at Madisonville, Pecan Park in Houston, Port Arthur, Wynnewood Hills in Dallas, Midtown and Southside Church of Christ in Fort Worth. Wyatt's real passion was youth ministry, which he pioneered in the Churches of Christ. A fatherless child, Wyatt had an urgency to give boys what he grew up without by organizing sports programs for inner city Dallas youth. The one stipulation for playing on Wyatt's teams was to attend Bible School each Sunday at some church. Under Wyatt's leadership, Red Oak Springs Youth Camp was built and still serves today. He also published numerous books including the youth novel, "Must the Young Die, Too?" In the last years of their ministry, Wyatt and Chris Sawyer shifted their work to serving and ministering to the needs of older Christians and shut-ins.

Wyatt was preceded in death by his beloved son, Joel Sawyer. Survivors: His sweetheart and wife of 67 years, Chris Sawyer; son, Jerry Sawyer and his wife, Judy; grandson, Justin Sawyer and his wife, Karen; and extended family. --Published in Star-Telegram on April 25, 2012
