Mary Perlie Adcox, 89, a homemaker, died Monday of heart failure at Magee General Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. today at White Oak Baptist Church in Smith County with burial in Merchants Cemetery in Smith County. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Raleigh is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Adcox was a native of Raleigh. She was a member of White Oak Baptist Church. Her daughter, Cleo Garner of White Oak, said before her mother moved to Rolling Acres Retirement Center, "she loved to work in the garden and quilt. She had her cows she milked, even in her early 80s. She made butter, and people would come and get her butter." One of her favorite memories of her mother is "as a little girl growing up, her cooking over a two-eyed wood stove, singing gospel songs." Her mother also loved to take care of her grandchildren, even Cleo Garner's two children who were born when she was in her late 60s. "She loved to do whatever they wanted to do. She loved her children and grandchildren very much. They were her life," Garner said. Cleo Garner's son, John Garner, recalled visits with his grandparents when his grandmother would make chicken and dumplings, a favorite dish of his. "She just tried to do whatever she could for me and give us all she could," he said. " Other survivors include: son, Walter Clinton Adcox of Boise, Idaho; daughters, Velma Ware of Pearl and Voncile Henderson of Jackson and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
