Johan (Emichen) was born in Worms, Germany, as was his wife, Maria Ursula Rosenbachin. They were married before 1700 in Germany. She must have died before they left for America, probably in England.

Johan immigrated to the United States on 5-5-1709, coming through Nutten Island (Governor's Island), Kings Co. New York. He was among the first of the Paltinates to come to this country. According to the 'London Lists of Palatine Immigrants, Ernst was 55, his sons were 9, 6, 5 & 1 1/2. On the manifest from Rotterdam to London with Maria, she is listed as his wife with 4 children.
Johan was a Lutheran husbandman and vinedresser. He owned property by 1723.

After the death of his first wife, he married Margaretha Winter, daughter of Hans Carl Winter, on 8-21-1709. Then later he also married Anna Christiana.

The German spelling was 'Emichen'. The name was also spelled 'Empey' by some of his family.
