Obituary
The Salem Argus newspaper, July 8, 1886
Died - At Bird City, Cheyenne Co, Kansas on June 23d, 1886, Mrs. Mary C. McCuen, wife of Wm. McCuen; aged 42 years, 4 months and 15 days.
Mrs. McCuen had resided in this vicinity for years and was well known to our people as one of those earnest Christian women who was always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy and oppressed. She was born in Knox County, Ohio and came to Kansas in 1878. For years she had been slowly but surely succumbing to that much dreaded and fatal disease, consumption. A few weeks ago, in company with her husband she started for Colorado; where she hoped to find relief, but on the way she was o'ertaken by the grim messenger who relieved her of the pains and disease which she had so long and patiently endured without a murmur of complaint. Her remains were brought back to the residence of her brother, J.A. Beeler, at which place a large concourse of friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to the dear, but departed, friend. Rev. M.J. Bailey conducted the services, and then the earthly remains of the relieved one was borne to the silent resting place in Webb Hill's cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved husband and all those who mourn.
