EARL C. FOSTER DROWNS IN POND
Mr. and Mrs. Leo T. Foster, of southwest of Palmyra, have the deep sympathy of their neighbors and many friends in the tragic loss of their ten-year old son, Earl Clifton, who was drowned Monday afternoon in the pond on the Charles Million farm. His parents believed that he had sought relief from the summer heat and had attempted to go bathing in the pond which is said to be about 8 feet deep.
Monday afternoon Mr. Foster and his two sons, Leo Ray, 12 years old, and Earl Clifton, had started out to deliver a hay rake to the home of John Carwell. On the way, Earl Clifton saw some wild plums along the road and had stopped to eat some. His father and brother went on and delivered the rake, but when they returned to where Earl Clifton had stopped to eat the plums, he was not there. When the child did not return later in the day the parents became much worried and about dark, a general alarm went out over the neighborhood. Neighbors started out in the search. On the levee of the pond, the boy's overalls were found and about 11:30 o'clock Monday night Hubert Bunton and Olive Crim found the body which was taken out of the water by Charles Jefferson. The last time the boy was seen alive was at 3 p. m., Monday, when a neighbor boy, George Baker, 8 years old, said he walked down the road with him. Mr. Foster said that his son could not swim.
Earl Clifton Foster was born March 19, 1936, at Woodland, and he had spent all of his short life in that vicinity. He leaves his parents, his brother, Leo Ray, three sisters, Mildred Jean, Marjorie Lee, Patricia Ann, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Cora L. Foster, and his paternal grandfather, O. R. Bittleston, of Woodland.
The body was removed to the Lewis Bros, funeral home in this city and prepared for burial. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Pleasant Hill Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. A. E. Bibb. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill cemetery.
