History - Samuel's people lived in Scotland and were weavers by trade. The Gray family boarded the ship “William Tapscott” on May 11, 1860 and sailed from Liverpool, England in the company of 731 other saints under the direction of Asa Calkin. During the voyage small pox broke out among the emigrants, who had to remain several days in quarantine after arriving at New York harbor. They landed June 20, 1860 and remained in Haverstraw, New York for one year.

On September 23, 1861 they arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah with the last church train, which was under the direction of Ansil Perse Harmon. From Salt Lake City they moved to Beaver, Utah where Samuel practiced his trade of weaving and wove the first carpet in the St. George Temple.
