Layton, who was born in 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, earned a Bachelor's degree in optometry and a Master's in physiology from the University of California, Berkeley. During World War II, he worked in radar development for the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
He married Lynn Layton in 1946 and they moved to Paradise in 1948. He was a part-time clinical professor of Optometry in the UC Berkeley School of Optometry while practicing in Paradise.
Layton was accepted into the American Academy for the Advancement of Science as a graduate student at UC Berkeley and was named by his peers an Outstanding Optometrist of Northern California.
Layton is a past president of Paradise Rotary Club and launched the club's International Student Visitation Program. Art and Lynn Layton served two summers in Zimbabwe, Africa, providing optometric care in a project sponsored by Rotary International.
After retiring, Layton learned to play the clarinet, and joined and performed with the Paradise Community Concert Band.
Layton was preceded in death by son Ron, but is survived by his wife, Lynn, children Leslie and Barry, as well as many nephews and nieces.
