Albert Adams, youngest son of Hannah (née Bell) and Thomas Jefferson Knott, senior, was born in Hillsdale County, Michigan. The Knott family moved in 1856 to Cedar County, Iowa.

Albert A. Knott and Margaret A. Welty were married on 3 February 1870 in Cedar County. The couple, who became the parents of six children, lived in Kansas and Colorado, and about 1905 moved to Vallejo, Solano County, California, where he established Knott's Drugstore.
