William and his wife Elizabeth were the first VanBebbers to settle in Ray County. They were part of a wagon train that traveled west through the Cumberland Gap to St. Louis, Missouri. From there they went on to Ray County, Missouri where they settled with a land grant. There were 38 people on the wagon train. The names of the families were: Grimes, Yoakum, McGlothin, Thomas, Adams, Kincaid and VanBebber.
