He was educated at the Brockport Collegiate Institute, after which he spent two years at Buffalo, New York as clerk in a commercial house, in the study of practical business details and in a commercial college. In 1860 he came to Chicago and entered the banking house of Edward I. Tinkham & Co. Since that time Mr. Brewster has been closely identified with the banking interests of the city.

In January, 1868, he established the wholesale grocery house of Farrington & Brewster; In 1876, he created the firm of Edward L. Brewster & Company from which he retired in 1904.

He was one of the founders of Chicago Stock Exchange and served as President of the Exchange. He was an investment banker and served as a director of the Chicago Edison Company.
