SERGEANT HANS AAMOLD
St. Paul PD
Died September 27, 1914

On Saturday night, September 26, at 353 University Avenue, the owner of F.H. Ramlow's Saloon called police about two suspicious individuals inside the bar whom he thought were possibly going to rob him. Sergeant Aamold and Frank Kline, wagon driver at the Rondo station, responded. Aamold entered the bar from the front and Kline from the rear and the saloon owner pointed out the two men to the officers. Sergeant Aamold arrested the shorter man. As they were walking outside, the suspect pulled away from Sergeant Aamold and shot him twice. Aamold fell to the ground He was later taken to City Hospital where he died the next day at 3:30 p.m.

Kline, who was still inside with the other suspect at the time of the shooting, later took his suspect to the station for questioning. He was identified as Daniel Carney, 35.

Twenty minutes later, motorcycle Officer Frank Welander from the Prior Avenue station, was sent to 1721 Blair Street for a report of boys trying to steal refreshments at a party. As he was trying to locate the house number, he saw a man wearing a raincoat walking down the street. The suspect shot at the officer three times, hitting him in his right hand and arm, his left leg and his abdomen. The officer had no chance to use his gun. Welander was taken to Cobb Hospital.

The shooter, who matched the description of the suspect from the Aamold shooting, escaped.

Sergeant Aamold was 47 years old and had been with the department for 24 years. On September 6, 1890, he was hired as a driver for the Margaret Street Patrol Wagon. Two years later, he drove the wagon at the Central Station. He did this for three years and then had been assigned back to the Margaret District. In April, 1900, he made desk sergeant and was assigned to the Margaret Street Station. In 1905 he was transferred to the Rondo Street station. His wife, Clara, and five children, Lina, Edith, Walter, Helen and Dorothy, survived him. The funeral was held at the family home at 913 DeSoto Street at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30. He was buried in Roselawn Cemetery.
