Enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 3 April 1862 at Camp Terry, Travis County, Texas. He was mustered in Company I, 16th Texas Infantry as a private. His last date on his service record is April 1865 when he was sent home because he lost his hand.

James was the son of James Harrell (possibly Harold), born in Arkansas & Nancy Logan. His sister Anne Harrell is Memorial #57454044.
