Detroit meatpacker who in 1869 began packing beef in ice-filled railroad cars for shipment to the East, ending forever the shipping of live cattle by rail. The city of Hammond, neighboring Chicago at the Indiana state line, was incorporated in 1884 and named after Hammond who owned a large slaughterhouse, the first industry to locate in the area. Husband of Ellen Barry; son of John Hammond & Sarah Huston.
