In 1940 he, his mother, step-father, and brother Edward lived in an apartment they were renting for $35 a month at 1718 Garfield Place in Los Angeles, CA. His step-father worked as the chief clerk in the Marshall's Office, with an income in 1939 of $3000 for 52 weeks of work, and his brother as an electrical engineer, with an income in 1939 of $300 for 30 weeks of work.

In 1950 he was a lodger at what is now Cal Poly Pomona just outside of Pomona, CA in the San Jose Hills. (It was called San Jose Township in 1950.) He was doing citrus work at the State College.
