Bessie is the daughter of Michael and Anne Carlile Gatrost. She graduated from Persia High School and Woodbine Normal. She taught rural schools in the area for five years. It is said that she was a strict disciplinarian.

Bessie married Wellen Chapman Feb 27, 1901. To this union 3 children were born;
