Joseph Read Ogden was the third of the four children and second of the two sons of Benjamin Ogden and Hannah Read. He was probably named after his maternal grandfather, Joseph Read. Joseph was born in Knowlton Township, which is now in Warren County, New Jersey, but at the time of his birth was part of Sussex County. His father died in August 1794 and his mother married the Rev. Daniel Vaughan, the pastor of the Knowlton Baptist Church, which stood within the boundaries of what is now Union Brick Cemetery in Blairstown Township in Warren County.
Joseph married Sarah Ann Lanterman, daughter of Jacob Lanterman and Mercy Luse, on 26 March 1812. The couple had seven children, all born in Sussex/Warren County:
1) Jacob Lanterman Ogden (1813-1888), settled in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
2) Benjamin Vaughan Ogden (1815-1857), settled in Ackley, Hardin County, Iowa.
3) Hannah Mingle Ogden (1817-1904), married William Haynes Kern, lived in Sussex County, New Jersey.
4) Amos Hampton Ogden (1818-1892), settled in Manhattan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
5) Isaac Snyder Ogden (1822-1865), settled in Berlin, Iowa.
6) Joseph William Ogden (1826-1875), settled in Bloomer, Chipppewa County, Wisconsin.
7) Abram France Ogden (1827-1901), lived in Wantage Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.
Joseph's wife Sarah died 01 April 1829. He married as his second wife, Dinah France, the daughter of his step-sister Elizabeth Vaughan and her husband Jacob France. They had three children, the first two were born in Warren County, New Jersey, the third was born in Schuyler County, New York near Watkins Glen. Joseph's mother Hannah Read Ogden Vaughan had settled in the village of Burdett, near Watkins Glen after the death of her second husband. Joseph and Dinah's children were:
1) Daniel Vaughan Ogden (1830-1894), settled in Milton, Oregon.
2) Sarah Ann Ogden (1833-1902), married Jared Davis and lived in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
3) Azubah L. Ogden (1837-1916), married Benjamin Franklin Kelsey (her step-brother), and lived in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Joseph and Dinah moved the family to Tioga County, Pennsyvlania between 1837 and 1840. Joseph died there on 27 May 1840, 11 days after the death of his daughter-in-law, Alvira May Ogden, wife of his eldest son Jacob Lanterman Ogden.
Joseph's widow, Dinah France Ogden married Daniel Kelsey, Sr. after Joseph's death. He was a widower with at least six children.
