Death Claims Dr. Savage
Dr. Henry J. Savage, 82, 854 Walnut Street, died at his residence at 1:30 p.m. following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, with the Rev. John Speaks officiating.
Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery, with Collier-Butler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers will be: Bill Sibert, Dr. Harry Campbell, Ralph Breeden, Ned Bender, Mercer Thomas, Gary Jordan, Max Mosely, George King and Dr. Thurwell Nolen.
Honorary pallbearers are: John Page, Warren Smith, R.J. Bradley, Julius Swann, Adolph Reich, Dee Holloway, Carl Lay, L.C. Lee, Burr Bixler, John Bentley, Charles Crawford, Bill Drake, J. E. Young, Russell Hooks, Sr., members of Etowah County Medical Society, members of Gadsden Rotary Club and all other personal friends.
Dr. Savage is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence B. Savage; two nephews, Julian Savage, Coral Gables, Fla., and Henry Savage, Miami, Fla., and several nieces.
A native of Evergreen, and a resident of Gadsden since 1912, Dr. Savage was a graduate of Sewanee Academy and Tulane Medical College in 1901. From 1901 to 1912, he practiced medicine in south Alabama before moving to Gadsden. He did post graduate work in New Orleans, New York and Chicago.
In 1912, Dr. Savage started his practice in Gadsden and served as chief of staff at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, having been active in private practice until shortly before his death.
He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, having served on the vestry of that church where he was also a senior warden.
He was affiliated with the Masons, K.O.P. and Elks Lodge. A member and past-president of the Gadsden Rotary Club, he was also a member of Etowah County Medical Society, State Medical Association and American Medical Association.
In 1951, Dr. Savage received a certificate of honor from the State Medical Association in recognition of his completion of 50 years practice.
He was the son of the late Luman W. Savage and Ella Stearns Savage.
The family request no flowers. The body will remain at the residence until the hour of service.
