Medical Scientist. Born at Landskrona, Sweden, he was a physician, ophthalmologist and a professor at the ophthalmological clinic in Stockholm. For his study of astigmatism of the cornea which led to the design of more effective corrective lenses for the condition, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine in 1911. Highly respected for his integrity and his exacting research, he was later appointed president of the Nobel Prize committee.
