The son of Peter & Elizabeth (Lehmer) Fickes, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Carroll Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklin Township, York County, August 24, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 29 as a private with Co. I, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
He married Caroline Morganthal and fathered Cora M. (b. 10/14/67 - married W. M. W. Patrick), John E. (b. 10/23/69), Robert H. (b. @1872), William M. (b. 04/01/73), George F. (b. @1876), Howard O. (b. 07/29/78), and M. Della (b. 12/27/80). Cause of death is listed as "senility complicated with bronchitis" leading to "exhaustion."
