Ernest Benson Robbins Sr. is the son of Benson Montgomery Robbins and Nannie (Ashley) Robbins. Nannie (Ashley) Robbins is the daughter of George R. Ashley and Mary Susan "Sue" (Kirklen) Ashley. On the memorial of Mary Susan "Sue" (Kirklen) Ashley, the name Colquitt has been added to her name and I have also seen this name added by a few on Ancestry.com, HOWEVER, I found no official document to verify that she ever married a "Colquitt" and no one on Ancestry.com has an official document source or any other document source to show a marriage , a census , or any other verifiable document source linking Mary Susan "Sue" (Kirkland) Ashley to the name, "Colquitt".

Sudden Illness Claims Officer - Patrolman Robbins Succumbs In City

A veteran Alabama Highway patrolman suffered an apparent heart attack while on duty yesterday and died a few minutes after driving to a local hospital.

Ernest Benson Robbins, 41, 1912 Lookout Circle, was giving courtesy checks to holiday drivers on U. S. Highway 11 near Reece City when he complained of being ill. He was given permission to leave his duty station to go home and get some medicine. Stopping briefly at his residence, the officer reentered the car and drove to a hospital. He told attendants of being ill and died within a few minutes at 11 a.m.

Funeral services were to be held today at 4 p.m. at the Collier-Butler Chapel with Dr. Denson Franklin and the Rev. Robert Murphree officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery with Sgt. H.G. Lee, Cpl. Merrill Greathouse, C. R. Clayton, A.L. Sisk, A.C. Allen and I.C. Campbell, members of the Gadsden Highway Patrol Office as active pallbearers.

A native of Altoona, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benson Montgomery Robbins. A Methodist, he was a member of the Altoona Masonic Lodge No. 612 and the Alabama Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maxine Holliday Robbins; a son, Ernest Benson Robbins, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Hobart Thompson, Altoona; four half-sisters, Mrs. Ethel Campbell, Mrs. Allie Jenkins, Mrs. Cora Jenkins and Mrs. Laura Bell Martin.

Mr. Robbins joined the Highway Patrol in 1947 and was stationed in Eufaula and St. Clair County before being assigned to the Gadsden district eight years ago.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alabama Highway Patrol, Etowah County Sheriff's Department, Gadsden, Attalla and Glencoe Police Departments, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Alcohol Beverage Control Agents, Employees of Etowah County Courthouse all other law enforcement officers and all other personal friends.
