Fred William Schotte, 80, of Grants Pass, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at his home.

Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hull and Hull chapel, with the Rev. Randel Livingood officiating. Interment will follow at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

Donations may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Victorville, Calif., to Fred and Blanche Schotte. He moved to Grants Pass more than 60 years ago. On Aug. 17, 1946, in Grants Pass, he married Lucille Lohr, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and in the Naval Reserves from 1950 to 1951. He owned and operated Schotte Trucking from 1951 to 1983.

He was a member of the Southern Oregon Amateur Radio Club and the National Mine Warfare Association.

He enjoyed ham radio operating, camping, traveling in his recreational vehicle, building, woodworking and especially growing and planting trees. He grew and planted trees that make up the Veterans Memorial at Lake Selmac in Selma. He also sent seedlings around the United States and the world via his ham radio friends.

In addition to his wife, Lucille Schotte of Grants Pass, survivors include four daughters, Marilyn Schotte of Takoma Park, Md., Shirley Schotte of Grants Pass, Sharon Goin of Sublimity, and Marlene Schotte of Portland; a sister, Evelyn Davis of Grants Pass; and six grandchildren.
