The Chapman's arrived in New York on the ship Underwriter from England May 22, 1861 but Thomas was not with them. He would have been four years old at the time. He may have stayed wth three older sisters that were married,though highly unikely since the biographical history of Harrison County Iowa says that only seven of eight boys were living by 1891.
