1894 Ph.D University of Berlin, 1st American to receive Ph.D. in Egyptology.
1894 appointed instructor Egyptian studies at University of Chicago by President William Raney Harper
1916 wrote "Ancient Times", he coined term "Fertile Crescent" The book brought him to the attention of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
1929 Breasted hosted Rockefeller, his wife Abby, and son David, then 13, on a 3 month tour Egypt, Palestine & Syria. This relationship resulted in Rockefeller support for the Oriental Institute that Breasted founded in 1919 at the University of Chicago & for funding in 1930-31 of the new Chicago House in Luxor (360 miles south of Cairo). Chicago House is still the center of the archeology community in Luxor with it's 18,000 book library.
