John was the first settler in the Shenandoah Valley, arriving there circa 1732. His ancestors were French Huguenots who fled France during the 1500's. The family migrated to Ireland eventually where Mary Calhoun married into the family. Mary's family was descended of the Colquhoun Clan in Scotland and are descendants of Charlemange and about 50 ancient royals of Europe in Scotland, England, France, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, etc.

Son of: Andrew & Mary (Calhoun) Lewis Grandson of William Lewis.

Married in 1715 to Margaret Lynn, daughter of William Lynn.

John & Margaret were buried on homestead which he called Bellefonte, which is not a town.

Here lie the remains of
John Lewis
Who slew the Irish Lord, settled Augusta County,
Located the town of Staunton,
And furnished five sons to fight the battles of the American Revolution.
He was the son of Andrew Lewis, Esq., and Mary Calhoun,
and was born in Donegal County, Ireland, 1678,
and died in Virginia, February 1, 1762.
He was a brave man, a true patriot, and a firm
friend of liberty through the world.
