Myra Jane Sandidge Wood went to be with the Lord peacefully on Saturday, April 14, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

Myra was born in Harper, West Virginia, on May 21, 1912, the second child and second daughter of Philmore and Ollie Sandidge, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Luther Wood; three brothers, Eugene, William and Enoch; and three sisters, Revelle, Mary, and Elizabeth.

Myra was raised in Harper, West Virginia, and attended Harper Elementary School from the first through the eighth grades. She completed grades nine through twelve at Stratton High School, graduating in 1931 with her high school diploma. Myra recalls that as children, she and her seven brothers and sisters always had chores to do, including milking cows, feeding chickens, gathering firewood and washing clothes. After graduating from high school, Myra dreamed of going to college and worked seven years as a domestic to save money for college tuition. In the fall of 1938, she enrolled in Bluefield Teachers College, where she obtained her teaching credentials. Upon obtaining those credentials in 1942, Myra left West Virginia to accept a teaching position at Avon School in Afton, Virginia. She taught at Avon School from 1942 until 1969 when a hurricane devastated the area. After leaving Avon School, she taught at Ryan School in Lovingston for ten years before moving to Rockfish Valley School back in Afton.

In the spring of 1959, Myra married Luther Wood, and they were married for thirty-three years before he passed away in 1991. Myra had no children of her own but lovingly raised her nephews Raymond and George and became a dedicated mother and grandmother to Luther's children and grandchildren. She lived in Afton for almost 70 years and loved her community and the family and friends she made there. Myra had many accomplishments during her life, but one of the proudest was teaching others in her community to read. She cherished her work as a teacher, and her love for her students was returned to her as evidenced by the many cards, letters and trinkets she received from them over the many years she spent teaching.

Myra is survived by her older and loving sister, Vera Carter of Cincinnati, Ohio; her "sons", Raymond and wife, Vivia, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and George and wife, Ronnie, of Charleston, South Carolina; a devoted daughter-in-law, Alma; and many loving and devoted grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great- grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews and many friends.

The funeral service was held Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Union Baptist Church, 783 Avon Road, Afton. Reverend Phillip Carter officiated.
