Calysta Caroline Allen, the second daughter of Rodney D.and Elizabeth Showen Allen, was born September6,1860 in the town of Webster,Vernon County,Wisconsin, and she died at the home of her daughter,Mary Wilson in the town of Clinton. March5,1931,being 70years,five months and 17 days old.
She was the second child in a family of four children. Her Mother died when she was about 12 years old. In those early days, there were many hardships for the pioneer families in the country.Calysta at that tender age did more than her share to care for the other children and keep the house in order for some years. Then for a number of years she lived with the Samuel Savage family. In February,1879,she was united in marriage to Jonathan Milton Welch. To this union was born one child,Mary Elizabeth, with whom she was living at the time of her death, and who tenderly cared for her during her last illness.
She had been failing in health for some time, but she bore her suffering with great patience, always with a smile of approval and thankfullness for every kindness shown her.Hers was a life of ministrey and service to others, always striving to carry the burdens of others, forgetful of herself and her own welfare, that she might minister to those of her household, her friends and neighbors and even strangers that might be within her gate.
She was converted in life and joined the M.E.Church at Salem and proved faithful until death. Her husband proceeded her in death,December1,1916.One brother James P.Allen and one sister Amanda Hawkins preceeded her in death.
She leaves her daughter Mrs.Mary Wilson of Cashton, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and Many relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
Funeral services held at her daughter's home and at the Salem Church, where she was laid to rest beside her husband March8,1931.(contributed by Sharon Y. (Wilson) Harris,Thank you!)
