Born at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, to a Cáhita mestizo/indigenous couple about 1754, he was soon orphaned and left at the home of Juan Bojorques y [?] and Ana de Ochoa y [?], who then raised him and whose surnames he adopted. He enlisted as a soldado de cuera about 1772 and married (1) Cáhita neophyte Francisca Lara y Nuñez at Mocorito, Sinaloa, on April 3, 1775. He signed on to the Anza Expedition, which he accompanied to Alta California in 1776. Francisca died at San Francisco in January 1777 and he married (2) widow María Angela de la Luz Trejo y [?] de Alviso at the San Francisco Presidio Chapel on July 20, 1777 (SFD Marriage 00005). María Angela died at Monterey in January 1803. He later married (3) widow María Dolores Amezquita y Guana de Arroyo at Mission San Antonio on October 18, 1807 (SAP Marriage 00832).
