John Kyne was born to Patrick Kyne and Mary (Lydon) Kyne. John and a brother, Dermot, moved to California. John found a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad, supervising a construction gang. On November 3 (the birthday of the Japanese emperor), some of the construction crew celebrated by becoming drunk. Two of the crew, Torahiko Yoshimizu and J. Kemyji, attacked Kyne with tools and mortally wounded him. Yoshimizu fled and was arrested in Salt Lake City in March 1909. He and Kemyji were charged with murder, convicted, and sentenced to life in Folsom prison.
