Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - October 12, 1999

Deceased Name: Obituary: Mildred Billings Ottesen

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 89, passed peacefully away at The Salt Lake Home Monday, October 11, 1999.

Born July 5, 1910 at Imbler, Oregon to Leonard and Mary Westenskow Billings. Her grandfather, George Pierce Billings was one of the original pioneers to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and of Manti in 1849. She was married Jan. 18, 1935 in the Salt Lake Temple to Emil Carl Ottesen. He preceded her in death October 30, 1998.

Mildred's father died when she was age five. Later, she moved with her mother and family to Salt Lake City where she resided ever since.

Always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mildred served in many different assignments, chief of which were as a Primary and Ward Chorister. She loved music, and always sang in the Ward Choir. Her beautiful soprano voice could always be heard and picked out in a group or audience even if one at first did not know she was present. Towards the last, she just loved to sit, listen and sing-a-long to the different hymns being sung or played.

An avid member of The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) she served at times both as a camp director and instructor. Civic duties also occupied much attention. She was involved with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and serving as an election judge for many years.

Handiwork was her hobby, making innumerable quilts, tablecloths, hand towels etc. for family and friends.

What a tease! She loved having fun playing jokes/pranks on friends and neighbors. There was nothing better than having a good party.

She loved children. Hundreds of hours were spent tending the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was so proud of them. Other people's children were also brought into the home and cared for when special problems warranted it.

She is survived by three children: David Carl (Fay Morse), nine children and 11 grandchildren; Mary Ellen Olsen (Melvin), four children and ten grandchildren; Richard Billings (Sandra Rogers), four children and eight grandchildren.

A very special thanks to all the staff and friends at The Salt Lake Home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 14, 1999 at 12 noon at Russon Brothers Mortuary (255 So. 200 E.) Friends may call Wednesday 6-8 p.m. and Thursday 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
