James Bull was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, September 16, 1845, an died August 4, 1925, in Gilead, Illinois, at his daughter's home, Mrs. Chas. Sweetman, attaining the age of 80 years. He was one of nine children, seven brothers and two sisters, born to Willis and Hettie Bull, his parents. He came with his parents to Jersey county in 1857, tow years later came to Gilead, this county. He spent the balance of his life in Calhoun at Hardin and Gilead.

He enlisted in the Civil War in 1864, in Co. G, 147 Illinois Infantry, serving one year and two months. He was united in marriage August 2, 1868 to Mary H. Plummer in Gilead, by Judge Simpson. To this union was born eleven children, eight sons and three daughters preceding him in death. His wife died January 25, 1890.

Uncle Jim, as we all called him, was always kind and pleasant to all. No one came to his home hungry or tired but was cared for. He was a friend to all an enemy to none.

He leaves to mourn three sons, Stephen C., Charles E., and Arthur w., and one daughter Hettie Irene Sweetman, thirteen grandchildren, three great grand children and many friends for he was a friend to all. Services were conducted at the Carico cemetery in Gilead.
