Jennie filed for her widow’s pension. The Pension Department’s investigation determined he owned no real estate and his personal property at the time of his death was valued at $53: two old horses, a cow, and heifers – all of which had been sold to pay expenses of his last illness and part of the funeral expenses.
Jennie and the boys were destitute. The State of Minnesota paid $35 toward the remaining burial expenses and the Otter Tail County Agent gave Jennie the $8 a month she would receive as a widow’s pension until the filling was approved. Jennie received an additional $2 a month for each of the boys since Carlin was 15 and Tommy was 12. Jennie and the boys left Otter Tail County to live with her family in Minneapolis. Tommy died in 1915 after an operation. Jennie lived until age 89 and is buried at Pilgrim’s Rest in Mankato.
John’s grave remained unmarked until the Second Minnesota Battery of Light Artillery Reenactors with the help of the Otter Tail County Historical Society were able to work around the cemetery’s two years of missing burial records and ordered a veteran’s marker for John’s grave. The marker was dedicated on July 26, 2015. - Information courtesy of Vickie Wendel, Anoka County Historical Society.
