Clarence was baptised at the Lutheran Church in Hartington, Cedar, Nebraska on December 20, 1903. He moved with his family to Tripp County, South Dakota by the time he was 12 years old. He moved once more with his family, to Long Beach, Los Angeles, California, by the age of 16.

On November 17, 1924, Clarence was joined in Marriage to Myrtle Amanda Pauline McClary, in Culver City, Los Angeles, California. They first had a daughter, Clare Pauline, and then a son, Eugene Odene.

The first weekend in May 1959, Clarence took his boat to Catalina Island for the Annual Buccaneer Days Festival. An unexpected major storm came up and took the boaters by surprise. Clarence was lost at Sea off Catalina island during this rough storm. The Coast Guard rescued many boaters but Clarence was never found. Only his boat was recovered with no one on board.
