Born William Trewartha Bray, Billy, as he was called, was a drunken and lascivious miner near Truro, Cornwall, England. His grandfather and father were pious Methodists. After his father died, Billy was raised by his grandfather. He lived a sinful life of drinking. Night after night his wife had to bring him home from the bars, drunk.

He became awakened to his sinful state by reading Bunyan's "Visions of Heaven and Hell." Fighting the temptations and discouragements of the devil, he found God as he went alone
in his room to pray after his work one day. Billy became a well-known but unconventional preacher for 43 years of his life. He died at age 73. Bray is buried at the parish church of Saint Michael and All Angels in Baldhu where his grave is marked by a granite obelisk. Once the parish church of Baldhu, when this was a busy mining area. Now completely deserted - you can see the memorial to the 19C revivalist preacher Billy Bray, noted for 'his sanctified wit, Christian simplicity and fervid faith'
