He was the son of Elias Henry and Hannah (Bullen) Coffey.
He married Florence Hayes about 1878. They were the parents of Julia Coffey.
He married Lumina "Minnie" Morris Nov. 18, 1880, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. They were the parents of Thomas J., Florida, Lucy Cynda, Cleo, Hattie and Lillie Coffey.

Funeral services of Isaac Coffey, 78 years old, a native of Rockcastle county, who died at a local hospital Saturday morning, will be held at the residence of his daughters, Mrs. Flora Shelton, 609 North Limestone streets, this afternoon at 3 o’clock, the Rev. C. O. Baunta officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Lexington cemetery. Pallbearers will be T. J. Benge, With Wise, Lee Burton, Edgar Britton, John Neal and E. Sappe. Mr. Coffey is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie Coffey; four daughters, Mrs. Flora Shelton, Mrs. Cleo Spurlock, Mrs. Hattie Cutsinger and Mrs. Charles A. Taylor, all of Lexington; one son, Thomas Coffey, of Lexington.
