Colonel (Ret.) Peter Joseph Lacey, Jr. 1916 ~ 2006 Joe Lacey, 89, died May 5, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born August 15, 1916 in Tooele, Utah to Jennie Shields and Peter Joseph Lacey, the first of four children.

Joe attended Tooele High School and Utah State University where he played football for the Aggies when they won the Rocky Mountain Championship in 1936. Joe retired after 30 years of service in the Army, having served in the battle for the Aleutian Islands in World War II, Strategic Air Command in England, Counter Intelligence Command in Japan, Attach‚ to the U.S. Ambassador to Laos, Command Information Unit at the Pentagon, Public Affairs Officer at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe. His final assignment was Commanding Officer at Defense Information School in Indiana. Joe retired from the service in 1971, marking the end of "a very satisfying career."

A move to Carmel, California brought opportunities to play golf and serve church and community, including a call to be Bishop of the Fort Ord Ward. Participation in, and service to, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been a major part of Lacey's life. Upon returning to Salt Lake in 1988, Joe served as Counselor in the Salt Lake Home and held various teaching assignments in the Capitol Hill Ward. In 1994 Joe was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Utah State University.

Joe married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Whitehouse, in 1940. They had a son, Jody, in 1946.

He is survived by his widow Mary; sister, June Lacey Robinson, of Palo Alto, CA; sisters-in-law, Karma H. Lacey of Salt Lake City; and Mary C. Lacey of Montgomery, Alabama; grandchildren, Tom Lacey of Tigard, Oregon; and Susan Velasquez of Arlington, Washington; one great-grandchild, Cody Velasquez; and many treasured nieces, nephews and loving friends. Preceded in death by his only son Peter Joseph Lacey III; Jody's wife Stephanie; as well as his younger brothers, Jack Shields Lacey and George Warren Lacey.

Joe and Mary have recently been cared for at Utah Veteran's Nursing Home. During their stay, Karen Hamm, a niece, and Russ Whitehouse, a nephew, have been "special angels". The family wishes to acknowledge the Nursing Home staff for their loving service on behalf of Utah Veterans.

Funeral services will be held on May 11, 2006 at 1 p.m. with a viewing from 11:30-12:45 at Tooele 4th Ward at 192 W. 2nd S., Tooele, Utah. Interment will be at Tooele Cemetery immediately following services. Joe has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the LDS Missionary Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
