Elmer was born on January 17, 1868, in Noble County, Ohio. He was the son of Garret and Sarah Van Fleet, who moved to Viola when Elmer was two years old, and the family lived on a farm on Hopewell Ridge just outside Viola. Elmer grew up on the farm.
He married Ella Bender on April 14, 1895. Ella was the youngest daughter of the early pioneers of the Viola area. Just prior to Elmer’s death, the couple was privileged to celebrate 65 years of marriage.
Elmer and Ella had 3 children: Sarah Mae (Van Fleet) Matthes (born April 11, 1897 - died February 3, 1981); Duane LaBarth Van Fleet (born February 6, 1908 - died November 1, 1974); and Vinson McLean Van Fleet (born 1911 – died 1983).
In 1926, Elmer and Ella retired from running the farm and moved to Viola, where they resided for 35 years.
At the time of his death, Elmer was survived by his wife, his 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, a nephew, and a host of friends; all of whom mourned his passing.
