Lewis enlisted as 35 years of age for Civil War service at Middleburg Twp.(Cuyahoga County OH), Aug. 11, 1862, in Company B, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Engineer. He was promoted to corporal, Aug. 11, 1862. Slightly wounded in a hand at the Battle of Resaca, Ga, May 14, 1865, he returned to duty. He was promoted to sergeant, Jan. 1, 1865 and mustered out with Company B, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, NC.

According to the 1850 Census his wife's name was Mary, born in 1825 in MA. In the 1870 U.S. Census his wife's name was Rebecca(nee Long), born July 11, 1834 in Cleveland, OH and died June 10, 1910 in Strongsville, OH. She is shown to have been buried in "Columbia" probably meaning Columbia Station. If she is buried with Lewis, she has no grave stone. He had 2 children with Mary and 5 with Rebecca.
