He learned to plow at 6 years of age, became a man at age 12 (because he was a Dimery) and began serving his country by enlisting in the Army at the age of 17. He traveled the world and spent almost 23 years defending his country, including several tours in Vietnam and Korea. From that service, he received numerous medals, including the Bronze Star.
After the service, he returned to the home he loved, Robeson County. He then had a career as an owner of an upholstery business and instructor at Robeson Community College. He loved his church — Christ the Victorious Church— his church family, relatives and friends, with a special place in his heart for the Steen sisters, Tela Brooks, Daphne Moser, Penny Steen, Mary Vargas and Gloria Jean Locklear (deceased).
Mr. Dimery was preceded in death by his parents, Javan Dimery and Jessie Bell Locklear Dimery; and his sisters, Maitland (John Earl) Cummings and Joyce Locklear.
He leaves behind his wife of almost 30 years, Sue Steen Dimery; two children, Deborah Locklear and husband Phil, and Patricia Oxendine; and two special nieces and a nephew, Iris Locklear (Ricky), Enid Begay (Darryl) and John E. Cummings Jr. (Carol). He was also blessed with four grandchildren, Phil Locklear Jr., Chandler Locklear, Kristin Locklear and Nicholas Oxendine; and three great-grandchildren. He leaves in the earthly home three brothers and two sisters, Carlton Dimery (Irmgard), Charles Dimery (Blanche), Richard Dimery (Cathy), Louise Weaver (Roy) and Carol Oxendine (Thomas).
The funeral will be held at Christ the Victorious Church in Pembroke, the Rev. Donnie West and Brother Ricky Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in the Christ the Victorious Church Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.locklearandsonfuneralhome.com.
