Arriving in Vietnam 22 August 1968, Dennis was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. It was while Mike Company was conducting combat patrols in the vicinity of Hill 332 and 12 kilometers south southwest of Ha Tan Airfield that the Marines were engaged by hostile forces.
Dennis died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the head and body from hostile mortar fire.
Survived by his wife, Barbara Merryman of 2451 Coolidge St, Conklin, MI and his parents; Ray C and Ethel P Merryman, his sister; Bonnie and his brother; Paul Merryman, all of 2051 14 Mile Road, Sparta, ILL.
