Served his nation in the Civil War, commanding the 71st New York National Guard.
He led his unit in a march to Washington, D.C. despite suffering from an illness that had long troubled him. Two days after reaching the nation's capital, he died from a "hemorrhage of the lungs".

Vosburgh's body arrived in New York city on the morning of his funeral and burial, May 23, 1861. President Lincoln laid a wreath on his casket a few days later.

His monument was commissioned by his regiment and designed by noted sculptor Patrizio Piatti, who is also buried in Green-Wood.
