Three Persons Die in Car Crash near Pt. Pleasant

POINT PLEASANT - A head-on collision killed three persons near here Saturday night, state police said. Troopers said the accident occurred on WVa. 2, near Leon.

The dead were identified as Mrs. Esther "Birtie" Stephens, 79, of Leon; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Daisy Slayton Stephens, 59, of Rt. 2, Point Pleasant; and Delmer D. Hart, 27, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Point Pleasant.

Officials of the Mason County Sheriff's Department said Mrs. Stephens was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her daughter-in-law. Hart was the only occupant of the other vehicle, officials said.

The officials reported the impact of the crash knocked the Stephens vehicle about 305 feet.

Mrs. Esther "Birtie" Sayre Stephens was a native of Leon. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harold Sayre of Finley, Ohio; sons, Arthur H. and Minor Stephens, both of Point Pleasant, Everett A., of Mount Alto, and William of Clyde, Ohio; sisters, Mrs. Mildred McDade and Mrs. Frank Williams both of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Lester Adkins and Mrs. Harry Smith of Letart; brothers, John Sayre of Evans and Shirley Sayre of Leon.

Mrs. Daisy Slayton Stephens was a member of the Eckard Chapel Church in Point Pleasant and was an employee of the Quality Manufacturing Co. in Point Pleasant. She is survived by her husband, Miner Stephens; a son, Albert L. Stephens of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers, James Slayton of St. Marys, Kan., and Lowell Slayton, address unknown; and a half-brother, Jessie Wamsley of Columbus, Ohio.

Joint service for the Stephens women will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wilcoxen Funeral Home at Point Pleasant, with the Rev. 0. H. Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Creston Cemetery on secondary Route 87. Friends may call after 4 p. m. today.

Delmer D. Hart was an installer for Western Electric Co. in Columbus, Ohio, was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School. He was a member of the American Legion and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his widow, Beverly Wolfe Hart; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallie Hart of Leon; a sister. Carolyn Hart of Leon; and brothers, Elmer of Point Pleasant and Robert of Columbus, Ohio.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home at Point Pleasant with the Rev. Earl Perkins officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery near Point Pleasant with Masonic graveside rites. Friends may call after 10 a.m. today.
