Queen of Spain, third wife of Felipe II. Daughter of Henry II of France. Originally intended to wed Don Carlos, son of Felipe, but was married to Felipe himself in 1559. The unfounded legend of a tragic love between Elizabeth and Carlos is often found in literature, notably in Schiller’s Don Carlos.
