Consort Queen of Spain. Second wife of King Alfonso XII, whose marriage united the two most powerful Catholic nations in Europe in close alliance, she became Regent (1885) after the death of her husband and until the rise to the throne of her son Alfonso XIII (1902). She was a sovereign much loved by her subjects, and yet she is considered by historians to be a weak and passive Governor compared to the continuous alternation of Spanish political events, including the ruinous war against the United States (1898) which brought about the end of the Spanish possessions on the American continent.
