Joseph Horton Capps was the son of Benjamin Capps (b. bet. 1780-1790) and his wife Nancy M. Scurlock Capps (1803/04-1870) of Davidson Co., TN. His date of birth is uncertain but he was likely born 1830-32. After the death of their father in 1832, Joseph and his elder brother James Allen (b. 1825) lived with their widowed mother in Nashville. Joseph apparently lived the rest of his life in the city. His address in 1875 was 158 S. College St. The Federal census and Nashville directories note his various occupations as a watchman (1868), fisherman (1870), and coppersmith and tinner (1871-1888).

On January 15, 1852 Joseph married Martha J. Castleman (b. ca. 1835 [1870 Federal Census]), the daughter of Nashville blacksmith John Ahab Castleman and his wife Nancy Fielder Castleman. The couple had five children: Benjamin Franklin (b. ca. 1854), Amanda (b. ca. 1858), Susan C. (b. 1858), James Allen (b. 1862), and Minnie (b. ca. 1864). Daughters Susan and Minnie died young. Joseph was predeceased by his wife. He died of typhoid fever reportedly at the age of 58 years.
