Obituary. Salt Lake Tribune. 1936. Death Claims Tooele Area Civic Leader. John P. DeLaMare Dies After Lengthy Illness at Family Residence.

Tooele--John P. De La Mare, 77, Tooele county commissioner and civic leader in Tooele for more than half a century, died late Saturday night at his home here of neuritis following a lingering illness.

Mr. De La Mare had been county commissioner eight years and was a candidate for reelection this year. He also was a former Tooele city mayor, city judge and sponsor of many public projects here.

Born here April 8, 1859, a son of the late Patriarch Phillip and Mary Chevalier De La Mare, he was a resident of Tooele his entire life, except for a few years spent in Oakley Idaho. He married Agnes McKendrick who died a number of years ago, and later married Agnes Ellison who survives him.

During his residence in Oakley, Idaho, he served two years as postmaster.

His public service in Tooele included a term as county sheriff, a total of three terms as mayor, one term as city judge and eight years on the county commission.

As mayor, Mr. De La Mare sponsored the first sidewalk paving in Tooele, was a backer of the seven-mile road to Settlement Canyon and also worked for the road from Tooele up MIddle canyon, which he proposed as a link in a scenic drive via Bingham, from Salt Lake City to Tooele.

He served in 1884-6 in the southern states L.D.S. mission.

Surviving, besides his widow, are five sons, Frank De La Mare, Los Angeles, Cal.; Wilford De La Mare, Pocatello Idaho; LeGrand and Thurman De La Mare, Santa Barbara, Cal., and Robert De La Mare, Salt Lake Ctiy; a daughter, Mrs. May Smith, Oakley, Idaho; Two brothers and six sisters, Thomas, Philip and Lydia De La Mare; Mrs. James Gowans and Mrs. Nettie Droubay, Tooele; Mrs Sophia McLaws, St. Josephs, Cal.; Mrs. John W. Tate, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Josephine Boyce, Little Rock, Ark.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Tooele L.D.S. South ward chapel by Bishop Ross Gowans. Friends may call at the family home prior to the services. Burial will be in Tooele City cemetery.
