He was born June 4, 1922, at Scofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii, the only child of Claude and Genevieve Duncan. His father was a career military man, first in the Army then in the Army Air Corps, eventually retiring as a brigadier general. As a military brat, Bruce lived in a variety of places, but his favorite was Falls Church, Va., where he lived next door to cousins.
In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and spent the next four years in San Diego, Calif., as a hospital corpsman. He attended the Otis Art Institute where he studied architecture and designed and built a home in Santa Anna, Calif., where he lived for 30 years. He worked as a teller for Wells Fargo Bank and met Loisan Wilson, who preceded him in death. They had a mutual interest in history and genealogy and would travel to Ashland, Ore., to see plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival each summer. In 1987, they married and moved to Talent, Ore., that same year.
Bruce enjoyed Civil War history, genealogy, traveling, classical music and western movies. He was a member of the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution and was active in Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, Ore.
