Attorney and politician.  He graduated from Williams College in 1807, studied law, attained admission to the bar in 1810, and practiced in Cazenovia.  A Democrat, he served in the New York State Senate from 1826 to 1829.  In 1829, Governor Martin Van Buren resigned to become U.S. Secretary of State.  His Lieutenant Governor, Enos T. Throop, succeeded to the governorship, and as President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, Stebbins became acting Lieutenant Governor, a post he held until the end of the year.  After leaving the State Senate, Stebbins served for over 10 years as a member of the state Banking Commission.
