"Yesterday passed away, John C. Mercer, the last one of four brothers whose names have long been known to the old residents of this city. Early in the winter, Mr. Mercer contracted a severe cold while attending the funeral of his brother, the Rev. Alexander G. Mercer, at Newport. From this affliction he never recovered, as it developed into a serious illness, with a fatal termination yesterday. On Saturday evening it was reported that he was better but the hopes thus raised were soon destroyed. He leaves a widow but no children. In early life, with the two brothers, Singleton and Hall, and Mr. Antelo, he established the firm of Mercer Brothers & Co. For years they conducted a commission business on the North Wharves. This was continued until about thirty-five years ago, when Singleton and Hall retired, the former to assume the presidency of th Farmers and Mechanics' Bank. The firm was continued under the title of Mercer, Antelo & Co., Mr. John Mercer being the senior member. He did not give up business until about seventeen years ago. Since then he has been living in retirement, enjoying the comfort his ample means afforded. He was a man of refined tasted and extensive education. He had traveled considerably in Europe, and from the fine sites of public buildings in those countries became an advocate of a commanding site for the Public Buildings of this city. He was a man who did not seek notoriety, and rather avoided publicity. He was a regular attendant at the church at Twelfth and Walnut streets. His funeral will take place from his late residence, No. 1819 De Lancey place on Thursday morning, at ten o'clock."
