Dixon dead at age 85

John M. Dixon Sr., 85, a former state legislator and prominent retired farmer, has died at his home of an illness.

Graveside services will be at l0 a.m. Monday in Riverside Cemetery with the Rev, Garnett Smith officiating.

Visitation will he 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville.

Dixon, who died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, was a native of Christian County. He was born June 11, 1911, son of the late James and Hettie Knight Dixon.

He served in the state House of Representatives in the early 1960s. In addition, he served as deputy commissioner for the state Department of Natural Resources, a post he was appointed to in 1972 by then-Gov. Wendell Ford. For many years, Dixon operated his 800-acre farm in the Howell community and sometimes farmed thousands of acres in South Christian.

He served as a director of Planters Bank and Trust Co. for 30 years, president of the Production Credit Association for many years and was an original director of the Christian County Soil Conservation District. He was a former president of the Christian County Farm Bureau and was a lifelong Democrat, having worked in the local Democratic Party. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He attended the old Howell High School and graduated from Hopkinsville High School. He attended the University of California and is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he majored in economics.

His first wife, Margaret Herndon Dixon, died in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Love Dixon; two sons, Judge John M. Dixon Jr., Bowling Green, and Joseph Knight Dixon, Elizabethtown; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sally) Hail, HopkinsviIle; a stepson, Joe Hicks, Brentwood, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jack (Betty) McLean, Russellville; a sister, Mrs. John (Margaret) Stites, Greenwood, Ind.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
